In a conference presentation titled “Exploring Restorative and Transformative Justice in the Indian Criminal Justice System,” Anwesha Panigrahi, an Assistant Professor at ICFAI Law School, Hyderabad, India, discussed the need for reform in the criminal justice system. While there has been some deliberation on restorative justice as a victim-centric solution, it is yet to make a significant impact. Panigrahi argues that in addition to restorative justice, transformative justice alternatives should also be considered to bring attention to offenders who are often overlooked. By drawing from peace-making criminology and transformative justice concepts, she explores the possibilities and promises of these approaches. The presentation also touches upon gender-based violence and environmental justice as important issues within this context.
